Narrative
Hylocereinae (Subtribe Hylocereinae) are unusual in the cactus family in that they have either weak or no spines at all. The Christmas Cactus is frequently cited as a representative of this group. Many species in this group are more tropical than desert adapted. Many species are epiphytes that do not have roots that enter the ground. The Hylocereinae tribe has been split into two smaller tribes: Hylocereeae and the Rhipsalideae.
